In recent times our good friend Paul Treacy from Athenry was diagnosed with a rare eye condition which is referred to as Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON'S) which causes sudden, severe loss of the central vision. This is an extremely rare condition with only 1 in every 50,000 people worldwide diagnosed with it. The past 18 months has allowed Paul to reflect positively on his unfortunate circumstances and rather than dwelling on the situation he has decided to fundraise to enable future research of the disease which in turn will help himself and thousands of people worldwide.
As it stands there is no cure for this condition and it requires extensive research, however, through study and professional consultations we believe there is hope for the future! The money raised will be directly utilised by an Irish consultant who will travel to Italy to begin research in the next few months (covid permitted) thanks to the vital fundraising over the past 2 years by Paul and friends.
We plan to raise €2000+ through this GoFundMe page by cycling the equivalent distance (within a 5km radius) from Galway to Dublin and back home to Galway in one day which is a 400km round trip. There will be a total of five of us doing this cycling event on Saturday the 21st November 2020 starting at 6am. All support is greatly appreciated by Paul & Friends. TIA ❤
