After nearly a decade in Stoneybatter, JaJa is being evicted and we are sadly losing our studios. We're now trying to raise money to secure a new, better, and permanent space which will invigorate the collective and allow us to increase our membership. We're hoping to continue to do the work we do, providing a low-cost art and community space in the city - building better studios and inspiring more incredible self-expression and creation. Can you help keep JaJa alive?
The Wider Community
We're not just an art space, we're an event and meeting space. Over the years, JaJa has provided a space for bands, musicians, fundraisers, exhibitions, low-cost gigs, workshops, and meeting places for activist groups. As artists and activists, we believe in solidarity with the community we are based in and welcome groups working in the area. We are looking out for new members and want to involve more people in the space. Feel free to e-mail studiosjaja[at]gmail.com to get involved!
Jaja is a collective of almost thirty members, who use the space regularly. Long-established workspaces in Jaja have been essential to the practice, development, and work of local artists, activists, and musicians. As members, we rely on this low-cost access to make this work possible and we are unable to afford other art spaces in Dublin city.
We believe that free, creative, and imaginative expression, in all its forms, whether it be art, music or events are vital to the mental and physical health of individuals and of communities as a whole. As one of the only DIY collectively run spaces in Dublin we must ensure we can continue to have a building where this can be possible.
With your help, we can continue to be a space that supports artists, activists, events, and creativity in Dublin.
What your support means
We need 40k to make this happen. We’re fundraising half and hoping to secure a grant for the rest. Here is a breakdown of what your money will be used for! (Based on previous builds and estimates based on warehouses available in Dublin).
Studios (based on model of 3m x 4m room): €21,600 for 20 (approx 2.5k each
€500 = One wall!
€600 = One ceiling!
€1,100 = One well-insulated wall!
€2,000 = JaJa manual labour workers wages covered!
€2,500 = One artist studio!
€4,000 = One gallery!
€4,800 = One practice space!
€7,000 = Electrician’s wages covered!
€9,000 = Builder’s wages covered!
€9,600 = Two practice spaces!
€20,000 = Twenty artist studios!
In the coming months, we will relocate. We intend to move to a larger building where we will be able to expand on our current operations and scale up the work that we do in our community. We will do this by building a larger number of artists' studios, establishing two rehearsal/recording rooms to increase our musician membership, and build a larger and better-equipped venue capable of hosting a greater number and variety of events. Independent creative spaces in Dublin (studios, galleries, venues) have been closing down at an alarming rate, and those that remain are inaccessible to many, due to high rental rates. This not only inhibits the creative freedom of people working in the creative industry but can prevent people from making a start at all. Artists, musicians, and other creative workers at the beginning of their careers are finding it increasingly difficult or impossible to find places to practice, exhibit, and perform their work. This situation limits arts access to people on high incomes or from high-income families.
We can't be left behind. It is vital for Dublin that we continue as a low-cost rehearsal, arts, community, and events space. Your support will mean we can make a move and a fresh start in a new location. If you can, please donate, buy a prize, and share this page!
