Little did he know that day his life would change so much.
After lots of tests and weeks in hospital he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Churg Strauss. He had suffered a minor stroke from this which affected his right side. He fought hard and gradually walked using crutches to meet his family at the lobby in hospital. He was about to be discharged and met with his team but while talking to them he took a bad turn in November 2020. He had to be rushed for an emergency ct scan which showed he’d had a severe stroke. The Churg Strauss had caused his blood pressure to rise so fast it caused a major blood vessel to bust leaving him with no speech, swallow or movement in left side. His family were called in as he wasn’t expected to make it through the night. He fought hard and got out of Intensive care unit and back to the stroke ward where he gradually regained his speech. His team decided to input a tube to feed him through his stomach. This really helped him build up and gradually he gained his swallow back to a minimum. He was ready for rehabilitation and went to Dungarvan for a few weeks. He was offered a place in Dublin Rehabilitation hospital and has been there for 6 weeks now. Although he has undertaken an intense rehabilitation routine, Michael is now confined to a wheelchair. His discharge date is the 9th of June.
Michael lives in a council house in Beechwood Grove in Portlaw which will require major adaptation and wheelchair accessibility to suit his needs. The work on his family home is due to begin the first weekend in May. The family have applied for a council adaptation grant which could take up to 3 years to get approval for the work to go ahead. If these renovations are not completed on time for his discharge date in June, Michael will have to spend further recovery time in a nursing home which will incur even further costs to his family. His family are trying everything to have him home as he cant wait to see portlaw again.
Michael’s family would be very appreciative of any support that you can give to help undertake these essential renovations on his home.
