On October 24th 2020 I’m planning to run the virtual Dublin marathon (26.2 miles or 42.2km) in memory of my Dad, John, a few days before his 10 year anniversary. I’m hoping to raise money & awareness for Pieta House who do incredible work to support those dealing with their mental health & also families like ours, who have been bereaved by suicide.
I found it really hard to talk about my Dad & what happened for the first few years (I would burst into tears whenever his name was mentioned). A few years ago I started to attend grief counselling regularly. It has really helped me to understand how to cope with the sudden loss of my Dad to suicide & the range of emotions that I’ve experienced growing up without him - anger, sadness, worry, guilt, confusion, fear. Every time I leave an appointment I feel a little bit lighter - that’s the power of simply talking.
Pieta House were there to support our family from the very beginning 10 years ago. Although I didn’t feel ready to talk then it’s comforting to know that their help & services were & still are available. They are such an important cause especially during times of uncertainty like these.
If you can support in any way by sharing the link or even donating I would be so grateful. And more importantly, if you need help please please ask for it. Talking about mental health isn’t always easy but the more you do it & the more it’s encouraged, the easier it becomes.
