This little pup came crawling into our research camp in the Okavango, unable to walk, but full of love and seeking help.  She was severely injured, with her back legs completely immobilized. Our area has both  predators and livestock, and we don't know how she was injured, but it's amazing she survived and made her way to us. She is bursting with the sweetest spirit. We drove her to the nearest veterinary clinic, an 8-hour drive on terrible roads and ferry crossing over the Okavango River.

We've named her Poppy.

From her x-rays, it seems two of her discs are crushed, and she needs surgery to survive. Her chances are relatively slim, and the surgery is $2,000-$3,000. If she makes it, and we are hoping hoping hoping and trusting trusting trusting she will, she will need a lot of post-op care.

She will be going into surgery soon. If you can spare $5-$10 or more, every dollar will help. If you are giving to other causes or just don't have the money, could you please invest your positive energy, love, healing vibes, strength, affirmations, prayers, meditation, or whatever you do to reach a higher power, and send it to Poppy?

Thank you, with love, amanda

Dear all,

I am happy to share updates on Poppy's progress! I am always posting news and photos to her Facebook page (Poppy the Puppy Who Stole Our Hearts--@PoppytheBotswanaPuppy), and I'm sorry I haven't posted here in awhile.

Here's the news:

Poppy is now at the Greenside Animal Hospital, a wonderful facility in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her vet, Dr. Suzette Gruebel, and the staff there treat her like royalty. Poppy is adored and has mostly free reign of the place, including in the big, grassy backyard where she lies in the sun and plays with her toys.

We now have the results of her MRI. The images reveal Poppy's spinal cord was completely severed at the level of T11 -T12. Her spinal cord after that is very swollen, and the MRI shows a fluid space. We will never know how Poppy was injured, but the damage is such that spinal cord surgery will make no difference to Poppy's recovery. Her vertebral fracture could be fixed, but that would not help her spinal cord. The vets--and all of us who spend time with Poppy--believe she is in no apparent pain, and her vertebra appears to be healing well on its own. Surgery would put Poppy through unnecessary stress. Poppy does have some movement in her back legs and tail, but that is likely mostly reflex movement.

What does all of this mean for our beloved pup? First all of, she is as happy, playful, curious, and bursting with life as ever. Given what I understand now about the severity of her injury, I am only more in awe of Poppy's incredible tenacity and spirit. What a brave little pup. We didn't find her in that remote part of Botswana--she found us, and I truly believe she knew what she was doing. She's earned every bit of love and adoration and concern for her future we all share. What a beautiful, tiny, but powerful symbol of hope in the face of adversity. She's helped me see how one little "stray" being with a loving, soulful, present gaze can bring so many people together, across languages, nationalities, world views, and beliefs.

What's next for her continued recovery? Dr. Gruebel believe continued physiotherapy will help Poppy improve more and regain strength and maybe even some ability to stand on her own. Poppy will also soon get her own fancy cart, or wheelchair, to help her race around and chase squirrels. She's already super fast, but a cart will help reduce abrasions on her hind legs from high speed dragging!

Meanwhile, we are working with a pet travel company, getting her ready for her journey to her forever home and family in Washington, DC. They are waiting for her with open arms (and paws) and hearts.

How have I spent your incredibly generous donations? So far, Poppy's care, tests, kenneling, and transport from Botswana to South Africa has totaled:

30,000 pula in Botswana (x-rays, vaccinations and food, documentation for border movement, physiotherapy, kenneling for a month, transport to Johannesburg) = $2,845
8,000 Rand in South Africa (MRI and kenneling and care at Greenside so far) = $585
Donation to Maun Animal Welfare Society = $500

Total: $3930

As I know more about the costs for her remaining time at Greenside, her wheel chair, and transport to the U.S., I promise to give another update!

I am so deeply grateful to all of you! Poppy is a happy pup, full of love and sweetness and spunk. It's thanks to all of you she has such a bright future. With appreciation, xo, amanda

Hi everyone! I am happy to update you on Poppy's health and progress. She is still with me here in Botswana, but we are hoping to get her to Johannesburg on May 3. She will get her MRI and then the vet team who is already waiting for her there will make some decisions about the next steps for her. She is getting stronger and bigger by the minute! She can stand steadily on all fours for a few seconds on her own, and she is moving her back legs, seemingly at will, when lying down or being held. The vets here in Botswana think she may be able to regain her ability to walk, with just physical therapy and no surgery. That would be incredible, of course. But the results of her MRI and diagnoses in South Africa will reveal more. Meanwhile, here are some of her favorite things: tugging and chewing on her toy squirrel and chipmunk, racing with love and joy towards every new person she sees, barking when she wants to play, and asking for (and getting) as many peanut butter treats as she wants. I have spent only about $600 from your contributions so far. I promise to let you know as her expenses increase--in Johannesburg and beyond. I am endlessly, continuously grateful (and still overwhelmed, to be honest) by your generosity and love for this sweet pup. She knows we all care about her, and our community is keeping her happy and strong. If you are on Facebook and would like to follow Poppy and her photos and updates there, her page is: https://www.facebook.com/PoppytheBotswanaPuppy/

Thank you again, with love, amanda

Poppy has the best news! She officially has her own home and her own family! I'm excited to say her new mom, MaryBeth Hastings, is one of my dearest, best friends of over 30 years, and Poppy's new dad, Howard Wilkins, is one of the sweetest, coolest guys I know. Best of all, Poppy will have three new sisters--two amazing humans, Sydney and Molly, who are full of love and fun and kindness and are so ready to welcome their new puppy, and one cool pup sister, Buffy, who, I believe, is excited to have another playmate. Poppy's family is waiting for her in Washington, DC, in a lovely home with a yard and big trees and so many trails and dog parks everywhere.

Poppy still has some journeys to make before she can meet her family in person, but at least now she has the security of knowing where she will land. The next step is getting her to Johannesburg, hopefully, next week, where she has a whole team of specialists, vets, and at least one sweet foster mom waiting for her (lucky pup!). Then once she's stabilized--either following surgery and/or fitting with a wheelchair--we'll make arrangements for her to travel to her new home.

Tears of joy for you, sweet Poppy! You are loved virtually by so many people all over the world, and soon you will be embraced by the real arms of a family who already love you. Thank you, MaryBeth, Howard, Sydney, Molly, and Buffy for opening your hearts and your home to Poppy! with love, amanda

Hi everyone! I got to see Poppy for the first time this morning since I left in March. She is so strong and happy! I will share updates on her health and recovery and the next steps for her (to South Africa and eventually to her new home in the States). But for now, I just wanted you to see this photo. I told her people all over the world love her. And here's the smile she gave.
Poppy's smile of thank you!

I can only speak for myself, but you can use my modest donation in whatever way you deem appropriate, whether for Poppy's surgery, a wheelchair, medicine... or for one of the other friends you've adopted. There must be a reason these animals find you, Amanda.

Such good news! Go, Poppy, go -- lot of healing love coming your way. IMO, use the donations for her care at whenever time and for whatever is needed -- the clinic care in Maun, wheelchair, surgery, etc. Should there be anything left on balance, please pass it on to those who are doing great things for the dogs and kitties of Botswana. :-) ♥
